![]() ![]() A single-player story mode is a nice feature, but who really wants to play this game alone against A.I.? The Duel Mode is better, giving a more tailored experience for when you only have one other friend to play with. What new features it does add are mostly secondary to what we all want from a Mario Party game. Oh, and it also is the debut of Waluigi in the cast, so that alone may make it the top game for you. Sure, there are new minigames, as there will be in every game, new boards, more items, and ever so slightly improved graphics. It is another iteration of the formula, but more in terms of refinement than actual innovation. ![]() ![]() Some consider Mario Party 3 the actual peak of the classic games, and there’s an argument to be made there for sure. This is where many of the most iconic games came from, and there’s hardly a bad one in the batch. Items added a bit of skill and planning to the game otherwise mostly being dictated by the roll of the die, and the minigame selection was not only large but also extremely creative. Want to see cowboy Donkey Kong or pirate Yoshi? This is the only game to do it. Plus, in a touch that is criminally locked to this one game, every character has a unique outfit to fit the theme of the board being played. Prior to Mario Party 2, there were no items, no duel or battle minigames, and less varied and dynamic boards. Basically everything fans love about the series was introduced in this game. Despite less than a year of development time, this sequel somehow knew what problems the first game had, where it could expand, and what new features would be the most fun. In the case of Mario Party 2, they changed only the essentials from the rough draft that was the first game and created an all-time masterpiece. This is a methodology that can result in some of the best games the company has produced, as well as some of the worst. Nintendo is a company that doesn’t like to do the same thing twice. Read our full Mario Party Superstars review 2. Whether you’re an old-school fan or new to the series, there’s no better way to experience the best Mario Party has to offer. Boards from the original trilogy and games from the entire series are all brought back here, from across the entire franchise, but now with the benefit of much-improved controls, online play, and a great roster of Mario characters to play as. Mario Party Superstars does what fans have been asking for for years and ditches all the weird board gimmicks, different dice types, and stinker minigames and looks back at all the great ones they’ve done and brings them forward onto the Switch. This game should’ve happened years ago, but better late than never. After Super Mario Party came close to recapturing the feel of the traditional board game style that made the older games the hits they were, and Mario Party: The Top 100 bringing back the best minigames but without that element whatsoever, this title finally brings together the best ideas of those two games into one dream package. The only game that could top even the most nostalgia-blind Mario Party fans who adore the N64 classics above all others is the one that combines the best of all of them into one new and modern package. Here’s how we broke down ranking all the best Mario Party games from best to worst. While some are held in extremely high regard, there are more than a few that are seen as downright atrocious. In the over two decades since we were first invited to this crazy party with Mario and friends, there have been nearly 20 different Mario Party games released. Some sequels are more similar to the original formula of traversing a map via dice rolls, collecting coins and items, playing minigames, and purchasing stars to determine the winner, while others only vaguely resemble that well-loved structure. Figuring out what works when and where attacks fit means players can become ruthlessly efficient, matching Sifu‘s revenge-fueled character. The game is merciless, but the reward for solving its combat puzzles is immense. Instead, it throws players into a difficult fight, telling them to grow up and figure it out. The game won’t hold your hand, and it certainly won’t offer any room to breathe. In the same way as Sifu‘s main character grows up, it demands players do as well. Two more attempts later and I could beat the first stage without dying once. Taking what I had learned from our first fight, I was able to beat the first boss again, only hitting age 30. I couldn’t continue the game, so I decided to start over. The first time I beat the game’s first boss, I had hit age 70. In fact, it’s extremely likely that the game’s first boss will beat you. The game isn’t forgiving in this you won’t be able to brute-force any of its bosses. While your character gets older and wiser in Sifu, you have to as well. Every attack can be dodged, leaving bosses open to a counter afterward. Some are vulnerable after a certain attack, others have moves that can be parried. The game’s first boss attacks wildly, eventually slicing away at players with a machete, while the third starts by using a graceful weapon made of knives tied to chains but soon after drops those for a pair of kunai. ![]() Each of Sifu‘s bosses has its own style, attacks, and personality. ![]() Sifu‘s bosses are some of the most difficult boss fights I’ve encountered in any game. The game does its players a favor by granting a bit of health back after an enemy is taken down, but that doesn’t matter much when it comes to boss fights. They range in difficulty, with some basic grunts going down in a few hits while other trained fighters can block attacks and have to be approached thoughtfully. Each stage, all of which are a treat to fight through, is packed with enemies. One of Sifu‘s many goals is to stay as young as possible over the course of the game’s five levels, a massive challenge in and of itself. Their character will also do more damage to enemies, as they’re an older and wiser Kung Fu master, but it won’t matter much if punches and kicks aren’t avoided. It certainly doesn’t help that with every decade, players have less health. ![]() Increasing every time players go down, the game can quickly spiral into a cycle of dying, growing older, getting up, and dying again. The character’s age in Sifu increases by whatever number the game’s “death counter” is on. This isn’t too bad, except dying more means coming back exponentially older. The more players die, the older they get every time they come back. Instead, some time is taken away from them, and they get up older. However, they won’t be the same after coming back from the grave. In the game, all of these fights take place over the course of one night, but for the main character, it may be years until their master is avenged.Įvery time the hero goes down in Sifu, they can get back up thanks to a magic talisman they wear. Players fill the shoes of a young, 20-year-old martial artist looking to avenge their former master, who was murdered by a group of five Kung-Fu masters. Grow upĮasily the most divisive part of Sifu is the game’s aging mechanic. But anyone who ever thought Dark Souls would be better without its bonfires is going to find a masterpiece in balancing difficult yet rewarding gameplay. And while that difficulty is almost always offset by the game’s immensely satisfying combat mechanics and its addictive progression system, being a Kung Fu master can get exhausting.įor some, the challenge that Sifu presents won’t be worth it, as they spiral into a loop of dying and getting back up. Sifu is a madly challenging game, pitting players against five bosses that they have to beat over the course of one lifespan, using 70 years’ worth of time in one night thanks to a magic talisman. Not only is the main character’s journey over the course of the game about them growing into a Kung Fu master, but you, the player, will have to improve as well. Self-betterment is one of Sifu‘s many themes, along with revenge and forgiveness, but it’s the only one that ties both the game’s narrative and gameplay together. ![]() ![]() ![]() By completing their quests or listening to their tales of hope and sorrow, you will learn more about Unbound’s grand universe of worlds and the portals that connect them.
